PSALM 41 (42) .

1. As þe hert de-siret to þe welles of waters, so de-sired my soule to
þe, Lord.
page 51
2. And my soule þrefe vnto God, welle liueand, whan ich shal cum
and apere to-fore þe face of God.
3. Mi teres were to me loues day and nyȝt, þer-wyles þat man seid to
me ich day, Where hys þy God?
4. Ich by-þouȝt of þe þynges, and priked in me my soule; for hy shal
passen in-to þe stede of purgatorij ful of pines, riȝt vn-to heuen.
5. Þe soune of þe ioiand ys in þe voice of ioie and of shrift.
6. Ha þou my soule, why ertou sori, & why trubles tou me?
7. Hope in God, for y shal ȝete shriue vnto hym; he his helþe of my
gost and my God.
8. Myn soule is trubled vn-to my seluen; for-þy, Lord, y shal be
þenchand on þe, God, of þe turning of folke of þe londe of Jordan and
of þe folke of þe littel hille of Hermon.
9. Helle blameþ þe fendes for þy deþ of þe croice.
10. Alle þyn lorde-shippes and þy techynges passeden up me.
11. In daie our Lord sent his mercy and on nyȝt his confort.
12. Lord, þe oreison of my lif is to þe; ha Lord, y sai, Þou ert my
taker.
13. Whi hastou forȝeten me, and whi am ich sory, þer-whiles þat myn
enemy tourmenteþ me?
14. Þer-whiles þat myȝtes ben frusced, myn enemys, þat trublen me,
reproued me;
15. Þer-whiles þat hij seiden to me vuch daye, Were is þy God?
16. Ha þou my soule, whi ar-tou sori, and whi trubles tou me?
17. Hope in God, for i shal ȝit schryue to hym; he his helþe of mi
gost and my God.

PSALM 42 (43) .

1. Iugge me, Lord, and defende my cause fram folke nouȝt holy, and
defende me fram þe wicked man and þe trecherous.
2. For þou art Gode, my strengþe; whi puttestou me out? and whi
goe ich sorwand, þer-whiles þat myn enemy tourmenteþ me?
3. Sende out þy lyȝt and þy soþenes; hij ladden me out, and ladde
men me in-to þy holi hylle and in-to þy tabernacles.
4. And y shal entre unto Goddes auter; to God, þat makeþ glade my
þingþe.
5. Ha God, my God, y shal schryue me to þe in þe in-mast of myn
hert; ha þou my soule, whi er tou sori, and why trublestou me?
6. Hope in God, for ȝete y shal shryue to hym; he is helþ of my gost
and my God.

PSALM 43 (44) .

1. Ha God, we herden wyþ our eren; our fadres telden vs
2. Þe werke, þat tou wrouȝt in her daies and in olde daies.
3. Þyn honde desparplist þe folke, and þou settest hem; þou
tourmentedest
folkes, and puttedest hem out of here pride.
4. For hij ne shul nouȝt haue þerþe in swerde, and her myȝt ne shal
nouȝt sauen hem,
5. Ac þy god-hede and þy myȝt and þe liȝt of þy face; for þou plesed
to hem.
6. Þou þy-self art my God and my kyng, þat sendest helþes to Jakob.
page 53
7. Whe shul chace oway our enemys þurȝ force in þe, and we shul
despysen in þy name þe arisand oȝains us.
8. For y ne shal nouȝt hopen in my waityng; and my swerde ne shal
nouȝt sauen me.
9. For þou sauedest vs fram hem þat turmented vs , and þou confounded
hem þat hateden vs.
10. Whe shul ben heried in God al day, and whe shul shryue in þy
name in þe worled.
11. For-soþe þou puttedest us now oway, and confoundedest us; and
þou, God, ne shal nouȝt go out in our vertuȝ.
12. Þou turnedest vs by-hynde rygge efter our enemis; and hij þat
hated vs rauissed vs to hem selue.
13. Þou ladest vs as shepe of metes; and þou desparplist vs amonge folkes.
14. Þou seldest þy folk wyþ-outen pris; and multitude nas nouȝt in
chaungynges of hem.
15. Þou laidest us in liknes to folkes, stireing of heued in folkes.
16. Þou settest us repruse to our neȝburs, vndernimyng and scorne
to hem þat ben in our cumpas.
17. Aldai my shame is oȝains me, and confusion of my face haþ
couered me.
18. Fram þe voice of þe reproceand and þe oȝains spekand, fram þe face
of þe enemy and of þe pursuand.
19. Alle þes þynges comen up us; and we ne forȝate þe nouȝt, and
we did nouȝt yuel in þy testament.
20. And our hert ne departed nouȝt oȝain-ward; and þou bowedest þyn
bysties fram þy waie.
21. For þou lowed vs in stede of turment; and shadew of deþ couered vs.
page 54
22. Ȝyf we forȝate þe name of our Lord, and putten forþe our hondes to
a strange God,
23. It is to witen, ȝif God shal nouȝt asken þes þynges; for he knewe
þe hidynges of þe hert.
24. For we ben slayn al dai for þe; we ben holden bi as shepe of
slaȝtter.
25. Arise vp, Lord; whi dwellestou? arise vp, and ne put vs nouȝt
oway in endynge.
26. Whi turnestou þy face oway? þou for-ȝetest our mesais and our
tribulacioun.
27. For our soule is lowed in poudre, and our wombe is deuoured
to-gideres in þerþe.
28. Arise up, Lord, and helpe vs; and bigge vs aȝayn for þy name.

1. Myn hert put out gode worde; y saye my werkes to þe kynge
of glorie.
2. My tunge is penne of þe scriuayn swiflich wrytand.
3. Fair artou, Christ, in fourme to-fore mennes sones; grace is shadde
